The Cincinnati Reds claimed infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera off waivers from the New York Yankees on Friday.
The Yankees designated Cabrera for assignment Wednesday.
Cabrera, 27, had spent his entire career with the Yankees, who signed him as an international free agent in July 2015. Since making his major league debut in 2022, he has appeared in 304 regular-season games, hitting .232 with 20 home runs and 95 RBIs.
This season, he played in just three games with the Yankees, going hitless in nine at-bats. He spent the bulk of the season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .288 with 19 home runs and 69 RBIs in 122 games.
Also Friday, the Reds placed right-hander Julian Garcia on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday, with loose bodies in his throwing elbow.
Cincinnati also transferred first baseman Spencer Steer from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list because of a right wrist sprain. Steer went on the injured list July 27.
